Labour unions of Pakistan Railways stage sit-in outside headquarters

LAHORE: A rally and sit-in organised by the labour unions of Pakistan Railways is underway outside Railways Headquarters in Lahore.

During the sit-in, the workers were protesting for the fulfillment of five demands: Improvement in the condition of Pakistan Railways, end retrenchment and downsizing, finish the mafia stronghold in the railways, fulfillment of the rights of the railways employees and disbursement of salaries and pensions of the workers.

The union had earlier campaigned in Karachi, Rohri, Kunia and Peshawar for two weeks to gain momentum for the sit-in.

Workers from all over Pakistan have gathered for the sit-in. Workers from Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh and Punjab have assembled outside the Railways Headquarters to stage the sit-in.

According to Express News, the 12-hour sit-in had targeted to gather at least 20,000 labourers, but so far, only 2,500 labourers have showed up at the protest.

A heavy contingent of Railways Police has been deployed at the site in order to maintain security.

Some political leaders were also invited, while, the ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Syed Munawwar Hassan, is also expected to come at the sit-in.
